Cultivating "Basic Medical Researchers Capable of Clinical Practice" to Expand Career Options
Program Director, Postgraduate Medical Education Center: Junichi Hirahashi
This is a new program launched by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare at a time when the importance of basic medical sciences research is being rediscovered worldwide. Aimed at those with a strong interest in basic medical sciences research, we aim to balance clinical training and basic medical sciences research by utilizing the excellent environment and resources of Keio University. In the first year, trainees learn basic clinical practice and team medicine from instructors in various clinical fields, while also learning how to transform assigned cases and encountered unresolved medical issues into research topics. Furthermore, during a specific period (16 to 24 weeks) of the elective training in the second year, trainees can belong to a basic medical sciences department and conduct medical research. This program cultivates "basic medical researchers capable of clinical practice" while achieving the goals of clinical training, which not only meets social needs but also significantly expands your career development. The Keio University School of Medicine provides the ideal environment to achieve the goals of this new program, so please take on the challenge. We have already received positive feedback from the first cohort of residents in this program.
