Keio University

The Three Policies of the School of Medicine

Mission of the Keio University School of Medicine

Based on the spirit of independence and self-respect and jitsugaku (science), we practice patient-centered medical care and lead the world in medical sciences.

  Notes

【independence and self-respect (Dokuritsu-Jison)】 "To maintain one's physical and mental independence, to respect oneself, and to not disgrace the dignity of a human being is what is called a person of independence and self-respect." This is the fundamental spirit of Keio University, meaning to protect the dignity of oneself and others, and to do everything under one's own judgment and responsibility.

【jitsugaku (science)】 The jitsugaku Fukuzawa refers to is not a discipline that is immediately useful, but rather refers to "science." The scientific attitude of empirically elucidating truths and solving problems is the traditional "spirit of jitsugaku" of the Juku.
