The Keio University Law School is planning the following changes to the entrance examination for AY 2022 admissions (to be held in AY 2021) from the entrance examination for AY 2021 admissions (held in AY 2020).
Please note that additional changes may be made in the future. In such cases, announcements will be made on our Law School's "Admissions Information" website
Once the selection schedule and methods are finalized, the Application Guidelines will be published around the end of this academic year on our website, under "Admissions Screening: Application Guidelines and Documents,"
available at Admissions Screening: General Admissions, Special Admissions (Open Program), and Course for students without a legal background - Keio University Law School . Please refer to it for details.
○ Establishment of a New Special Admissions for the 2-year Course
For third-year undergraduate students expecting to complete a Legal Profession Course (including those planning for early graduation and those eligible to apply through accelerated advancement [the latter will undergo a pre-application eligibility screening]), we are establishing the following two new types of Special Admissions for the 2-year Course, in addition to the conventional 6-subject entrance examination.
Please note that even if a successful applicant for Special Admissions who was planning for early graduation is unable to do so due to unavoidable circumstances such as an accident or illness, admission may still be granted if certain conditions are met (please refer to the Application Guidelines for details). Applicants in this situation should promptly contact the Keio University Law School section of the Academic Affairs Group at the Office of Student Services.
1. Special Admissions ① (5-year Integrated Program) (Admission Capacity: 45 students)
This is a selection process for third-year students who are expected to complete a Legal Profession Course at an undergraduate faculty of a university that has a partnership agreement for legal training with our Law School.
Selection will be based solely on a review of documents, including the Applicant's Report, academic records from the Legal Profession Course, and comments from instructors of required Legal Profession Course subjects in the spring semester of the third year. The application period is scheduled for early June, with the announcement of results in early July (before the end of the application period for the 2-year Course's Special Admissions ② and 6-subject entrance examination, as well as the Course for students without a legal background). Applicants for Special Admissions ① may also apply concurrently for the 2-year Course's Special Admissions ②, the 6-subject entrance examination, and the Course for students without a legal background.
No written examination in specialized law subjects will be conducted for accreditation of previously completed studies during this selection process. Therefore, each subject will be handled as follows.
For Constitutional Law, Civil Code, and Criminal Code, academic records from related subjects offered in the Legal Profession Courses of partner universities that have a legal training educational partnership with our Law School will be used as materials for accreditation of previously completed studies.
Furthermore, for Commercial Code, Code of Civil Procedure, and Code of Criminal Procedure, as these subjects are often offered during the fall semester of the third undergraduate year, they cannot be evaluated at the selection stage. Therefore, accreditation for these subjects will be conducted at the end of the third year (upon completion of the Legal Profession Course), using the academic records of these three subjects offered in the third year of the Legal Profession Course at our partner universities. For any subject in which the student has not reached a certain level of proficiency, they will be required to take the corresponding first-year Law School course after admission.
The admission capacity mentioned above includes a regional quota of 4 students to promote partnerships with undergraduate legal training programs at universities located outside major metropolitan areas.
For information on the undergraduate faculties that have a partnership agreement for legal training with our Law School and the details of these agreements, please check the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) website, "List of Partnership Agreements for Legal Training Certified by the Minister of MEXT,"
available at https://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/koutou/houka/1422481_00007.htm .
2. Special Admissions ② (Open Program) (Admission Capacity: 45 students)
This is a selection process for third-year students who are expected to complete a Legal Profession Course at an undergraduate faculty. It is open to applicants regardless of whether their university has a partnership agreement for legal training with our Law School.
Selection will be based on the Applicant's Report, academic records from the Legal Profession Course, and the results of a written examination in specialized law subjects (Constitutional Law, Civil Code, and Criminal Code).
However, similar to Special Admissions ①, as Commercial Code, Code of Civil Procedure, and Code of Criminal Procedure are often offered during the fall semester of the third undergraduate year and cannot be evaluated at the selection stage, an accreditation examination for these three subjects will be conducted before admission (scheduled for early March). For any subject in which a student does not reach a certain level of proficiency in this examination, they will be required to take the corresponding first-year Law School course after admission.
The written examination in specialized law subjects (Constitutional Law, Civil Code, and Criminal Code) for this Special Admissions ② will be held on the same date and time, using the same questions as the conventional "2-year Course (6-subject entrance examination)" (application period scheduled for early July, written examination in early September, and announcement of results in mid-September). Applicants for Special Admissions ② from universities that do not have a partnership agreement for legal training with our Law School may also apply concurrently for the 2-year Course's 6-subject entrance examination and the Course for students without a legal background.
○ Discontinuation of the 2-year Course (4-subject entrance examination for third-year undergraduate students)
With the establishment of the aforementioned Special Admissions ① and ②, the 4-subject entrance examination for third-year undergraduate students for the 2-year Course will be discontinued. Third-year students who plan to finish their undergraduate studies through early graduation or accelerated advancement without completing a Legal Profession Course may only apply for the 2-year Course's 6-subject entrance examination or the Course for students without a legal background.
○ Change in Admission Capacity for the 2-year Course (6-subject entrance examination)
Due to the establishment of the aforementioned Special Admissions ① and ② and the discontinuation of the 2-year Course (4-subject entrance examination for third-year undergraduate students), the admission capacity will be changed to 80 students.
*No changes are planned for the Course for students without a legal background (Admission Capacity: 50 students). Applicants for this course may also apply concurrently for the 2-year Course's Special Admissions ①, ②, and the 6-subject entrance examination.
