Overall Theme: "Shiku" (The Four Sufferings) and Civil Law—Contemporary Life and Law

Les quatre "souffrances (dukkha)" et le droit civil, ou la vie juridique contemporaine.

E. Thaller (dir.),La vie juridique du Français, A. Rousseau, 1908–1909, is a masterpiece that vividly portrays the lives of people at the time in various everyday situations, based on talks (causeries) by legal scholars. Its narrative style, which vividly shows how closely law is intertwined with our lives, may seem commonplace today. However, considering that the book was published in the early part of the last century, its novelty is quite astonishing. Early Buddhism, meanwhile, is rooted in the idea of liberation from suffering by directly confronting the fact that all of life is suffering. "Shiku" (The Four Sufferings), in other words, is life itself, and it vividly illustrates problems that are unavoidable, especially in modern times. Therefore, in this year's series of lectures, we would like to catch a glimpse of the state of "Contemporary Life and Law" through the lens of these "Four Sufferings."
