Keio University Law School, in co-sponsorship with the Mita Hoso-kai (Mita Bar Association), will hold a lecture by Judge Mariko Goto (35th term), Presiding Judge of the First Criminal Affairs Department of the Chiba District Court. The lecture is titled "The Current State of Saiban-in (Lay Judge) System—For Young Legal Professionals in Criminal Trials."

After her appointment, Judge Goto served in various positions, including Assistant Judge at the Tokyo District Court, Assistant Judge at the Naha District Court, Judge at the Tokyo District Court, and Judicial Research Official at the Supreme Court. She then served as an instructor at the Legal Training and Research Institute from March 2004 to March 2008, as Presiding Judge of the 16th Criminal Affairs Department of the Tokyo District Court from April 2008 to March 2011, and has been the Presiding Judge of the First Criminal Affairs Department of the Chiba District Court from April 2011 to the present.

As Judge Goto currently presides mainly over saiban-in (lay judge) trials, her lecture will cover topics such as: (1) how the saiban-in system has evolved in the four years since its introduction; (2) what takes place during pretrial arrangement proceedings and what kind of proceedings are conducted in the courtroom; and (3) effective courtroom activities in saiban-in trials from a judge's perspective.

The event will be held as detailed below. Current students and alumni of this law school are encouraged to attend.
