We are pleased to announce that the Keio University Law School will be offering Special Lectures on French Law, made possible by a donation from the Foundation for Continental Law (La Fondation pour le droit continental, Paris). The following is an outline of the course.

Purpose

In the current trend of 21st-century globalism, a significant challenge for both European nations, particularly France, and Japan, which has adopted Western law, is to create a new legal order. This involves inheriting the rich traditions of the continental law culture dating back to Roman law, while also integrating the development of the unique legal cultures within each respective legal sphere.

The newly established "Special Course on French Law" aims to contribute to the training of legal professionals who will lead the international community in the 21st century at the Keio University Law School, which upholds internationalism as one of its founding principles. Furthermore, with the Law School serving as a hub, the course seeks to promote the dissemination and development of continental law culture by deepening mutual cooperation between Japanese and French legal professionals.

Period

The course will run for a total of three years, from April 1, 2008, to March 31, 2011. Any subsequent extension will be considered by the Keio University Law School and the Foundation for Continental Law after reviewing the results of the initial three-year period.

Donation Amount

30,000 euros/year

Activities

Each academic year, the course will be held under a general theme that highlights the characteristics of continental law culture and is of interest to Japanese legal professionals. The general theme will be decided by mutual agreement between the Keio University Law School and the Foundation for Continental Law. The general theme will be divided into four sub-themes, with four professors from France or other continental law countries each delivering two lectures. The four visiting professors will be selected by mutual agreement between the Keio University Law School and the Foundation for Continental Law. One of the visiting professors will also give a public lecture.

Lectures will be held during the spring or fall semester. This course will be offered as a regular credit-bearing course (1 credit: "Special Lectures on French Law (Endowed by the Foundation for Continental Law)") in the Law School's curriculum (Advanced/Interdisciplinary Courses), but it will also be open to students and researchers from other graduate schools and universities. (*Details on how to audit the course will be announced on this website by the end of September.)

The lectures and public talks will be published in both Japan and France.

Student Tuition Assistance

In line with the purpose of this course and to encourage wide student participation, tuition assistance will be provided (we plan to offer full or half tuition subsidies depending on the number of enrolled students). As this assistance is similar in nature to a scholarship, the Keio University Law School will report the names and addresses of students receiving tuition assistance to the Foundation for Continental Law for the purpose of future Franco-Japanese legal and cultural exchange. Prior consent from each student regarding this matter is a condition for receiving tuition assistance.

Coordinator

This course will be established at the Keio University Law School, and Professor Naoki Kanayama of the Law School will serve as the coordinator.
