Guest Professor Manabu Yamazaki (a former judge) will give a lecture on the theme of "The Impact of the Pre-trial Conference Procedure on Criminal Trials." Current students and alumni are all encouraged to attend.

The impact of the introduction of the pre-trial conference procedure on criminal trials.

Speaker: Professor Manabu Yamazaki (28th term)

Professor Yamazaki was appointed as a judge in April 1976. After serving in positions such as Assistant Judge at the Tokyo District Court, Judge at the Sapporo District Court, Instructor at the Legal Training and Research Institute, and Presiding Judge of a division at the Tokyo District Court, he served as the Chief Judge of the Sapporo District Court from March 2007, Presiding Judge of a division at the Tokyo High Court from January 2009, Chief Judge of the Chiba District Court from January 2011, and Presiding Judge of a division at the Tokyo High Court from March 2012.

After retiring in September 2013, he is currently a Guest Professor at Keio University Law School.

The pre-trial conference procedure was implemented in November 2005, prior to the start of the saiban-in (lay judge) system in May 2009. Professor Yamazaki, who has been at the forefront during this period of transformation in criminal trials, will speak about the impact that the introduction of the pre-trial conference procedure, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, has had on criminal trials.
