Keio University Law School, in collaboration with the Mita Hosokai, will host a lecture by Judge Mariko Goto (35th term), Presiding Judge of the First Criminal Division of the Chiba District Court. The lecture is titled "The Current State of Saiban-in (Lay Judge) Trials—For Young Legal Professionals in Criminal Justice."

After her appointment, Judge Goto served as an assistant judge at the Tokyo District Court and the Naha District Court, a judge at the Tokyo District Court, and a judicial research official at the Supreme Court. She later served as an instructor at the Legal Training and Research Institute from March 2004 to March 2008, as the presiding judge of the 16th Criminal Division of the Tokyo District Court from April 2008 to March 2011, and has been the presiding judge of the First Criminal Division of the Chiba District Court from April 2011 to the present.

Judge Goto currently presides primarily over saiban-in (lay judge) trials. In her lecture, she will discuss topics including: (1) how saiban-in trials have evolved in the four years since the system was introduced; (2) what procedures are conducted in the pretrial conference and how proceedings are carried out in the courtroom; and (3) effective courtroom practices in saiban-in trials from a judge's perspective.

The event will be held as detailed below. We encourage all current students and alumni of the law school to attend.
