Keio University

Features of the Law School

Internationalism, interdisciplinarity, and a cutting-edge approach. These three principles lie at the heart of the education at Keio University Law School.

Fostering Internationalism for a New Era of Legal Professionals

Rapidly advancing globalization has led to the internationalization of legal disputes and crime, expanding the scope of activities for legal professionals to the international stage. Consequently, in today's society, an international perspective is demanded of all legal experts, not only lawyers specializing in international legal affairs. In light of these global trends, Keio University Law School is dedicated to fostering an international outlook. We have enriched our elective curriculum with courses on the legal foundations of the United States, Europe, and various Asian countries. For US law in particular, we have established courses taught primarily by full-time international faculty with professional or academic experience in Japan. Through experiential learning in international legal practice, we aim to develop our students' ability to resolve cross-border legal issues from a global perspective.

Cultivating an Interdisciplinary Perspective

In our rapidly changing modern society, new legal issues arise daily, demanding solutions from perspectives that can adapt to the times. This requires flexible legal thinking capable of presenting creative solutions unbound by conventional ideas, as well as an interdisciplinary process grounded in a historical perspective. Keio University is a comprehensive university with ten undergraduate faculties and fourteen graduate schools. With a history and tradition of leading liberal arts education in Japan for over 160 years, the university provides opportunities to cultivate a balanced sense of history, absorb a wide range of knowledge from related academic fields, and engage in new international exchanges.

Honing a Cutting-Edge Approach through a Diverse Range of Elective Courses

In the Workshop Program, which forms the core of our elective curriculum, students deepen their comprehensive understanding of the function of law in various fields and acquire practice-oriented knowledge and skills. This is achieved under the guidance of practitioner-faculty active at the forefront of their professions and includes experiential learning in legal practice. The Workshop Program offers a diverse range of fields, starting with the three main areas of corporate law, financial law, and intellectual property law. Keio University Law School has designed its curriculum with the expectation that many of its graduates will play truly leading roles as legal professionals in these areas. In addition to offering a wealth of related electives, the school also boasts a robust curriculum with highly advanced content in subject groups such as administrative law, tax law, criminal law, and medical law.
