Placement and Careers

Graduates of the master’s program pursue careers that draw on their research experience in fields such as the legal profession, national and local governments, international organizations, and private-sector companies. Many students who complete the master’s program and then advance to the doctoral program go on to work as university faculty or researchers, or take positions at research institutions commonly known as think tanks.

Major Career Fields for Graduates

Many students who complete the master’s program and advance to the doctoral program aim to pursue careers as university faculty or researchers. While demographic change is expected to make academic career paths increasingly competitive, those who produce strong research outcomes consistently secure positions at universities and other academic institutions. The key lies in the steady pursuit of high-quality, original research. For this reason, many students choose to study abroad at overseas graduate schools during their research, and the number of students who earn doctoral degrees from foreign universities continues to grow. An increasing number of them are studying abroad and earning doctoral degrees at graduate schools abroad.

Across all three majors, many graduates also find employment at research institutions commonly referred to as think tanks. As government-affiliated research institutes continue to transition into independent administrative agencies, and as the role of policy-oriented think tanks expands, demand for graduates of both the master’s and doctoral programs is expected to increase further.

Many graduates who complete the master’s program and choose not to advance to the doctoral program pursue careers as legal professionals or public servants. Others enter the private sector, where graduates of the Civil Law and Public Law majors often work in corporate legal departments, while graduates of the Political Science major pursue roles such as journalism and related fields that draw on their research experience in the master’s program.
