The fields of humanities and social sciences are designed on the premise that researchers are full-time employees of universities. This makes it difficult for researchers to sustain their careers if they cannot secure an academic post.

On the other hand, some researchers in the humanities and social sciences are now starting new practices. There is an increase in practices not tied to university posts, such as starting businesses that leverage research knowledge and conducting independent research outside of universities. However, new systems and business models to support the careers of these researchers working outside academia are still being explored.

This event, which explores the career possibilities for researchers, is co-hosted by the Keio University Graduate School of Human Relations and De-Silo, a general incorporated association that acts as an academic incubator to support researchers in the humanities and social sciences.

The four speakers are: Maho Isono, an anthropologist who has been working as an independent researcher since 2020 after serving as an associate professor at the Graduate School of International University of Health and Welfare, and who is also a director of De-Silo; Yoko Fujishima, a fashion researcher who teaches as a Project Senior Assistant Professor/Project Assistant Professor/Project Lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Commerce, Meiji University, while also serving as COO at Synflux, Inc., a speculative fashion laboratory; Kotaro Okada, the representative director and editor of De-Silo and an alumnus of Keio University; and Masayuki Okahara, the Dean of the Graduate School.

Together with the speakers, who are trying to create alternative connections between research and society, we will consider the future of careers for humanities researchers.
