Research Themes in Field
Faculty Member Research
In recent years, research involving cancer patients has focused on patients undergoing cancer treatment and cancer survivors. Through both qualitative and quantitative studies, we have explored topics such as self-care for side effects associated with cancer chemotherapy, medication adherence, unmet needs, and support for patients with comorbidities. We believe that elucidating the experiences of those directly affected will serve as a foundation for the development of new nursing practices. Currently, we are promoting the development of a self-care support program for patients with both cancer and cardiovascular disease. We are also participating in the development of guidelines, which is a project of the Japanese Society of Oncology Nursing. For example, we have collaborated with multidisciplinary members from other academic societies to create guidelines on extravasation, striving to establish a foundation for treatment and care.
Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) (2024-2028): The Efficacy of a Cancer and Cardiovascular Self-Care Program Focusing on Diet and Physical Activity in Elderly Cancer Patients
Preventing frailty in elderly patients undergoing cancer drug therapy: Developing a harmony care model through longitudinal research (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) (2019-2022))
Development of a program to prevent and manage targeted therapy-induced dermatological adverse events in oncology patients (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) (2015-2018))

Association of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer patients with physical activity and quality of life.
Employment status of cervical cancer patients: Relationship between employment status and self-esteem, self-efficacy and functional impairment
Relationship between frailty and quality of life in elderly gastrointestinal cancer patients at time of anticancer drug regimen changes
Interventions and associated factors for improving medication adherence in breast cancer patients receiving hormone therapy: A systematic review

Cancer patients, elderly persons, quality of life, self-care, cancer drug therapy, medication adherence, frailty, etc.
Introduction to Field
This field has two programs: the master’s thesis course and the cancer nursing CNS course.
1) Master’s Thesis Course
This course explores the characteristics of cancer patients, their families and cancer medical care and nursing. Students learn the concepts and theories essential for specialized cancer nursing, and investigate their application in practice and research. Furthermore, based on evidence-based practice, we will analyze and integrate the current status of and challenges in cancer nursing practice and research, thereby cultivating the ability to contribute to research on developing practices.
We aim for students to become researchers, educators and practitioners who can contribute to improving the quality of cancer nursing.
2) Cancer Nursing CNS Course
This course enables students to understand the characteristics of cancer patients, their families and cancer care and nursing. Students learn the concepts and theories required for specialized cancer nursing. In addition, based on evidence-based practice, they explore ways of analyzing challenges in cancer nursing and applying solutions in nursing practice. In combination with this, we aim to cultivate practical skills that contribute to the role and functions of nurses with an advanced level of practice in cancer care, while also developing their ability to work autonomously and display leadership.
Furthermore, since the 2023 academic year, we have been promoting the “Interprofessional Personnel Training Plan for Next-generation Cancer care,” which offers the following programs: Master’s program: Specialist Nurse Course Supporting Personalized Medicine for Cancer Survivors; Doctoral program: Cancer Life Stage Care Research Course.
In this field, we organize journal clubs principally for graduate school students in the master’s and doctoral programs, graduates and faculty members, which serve as a place where colleagues specializing in different areas can learn from each other.
Doctoral program
In this program, students will develop a deep and broad understanding of domestic and international academic trends and changes in cancer medicine and nursing, as well as key concepts and theories related to cancer nursing. Building on this foundation, they will focus on and explore their own areas of interest. Furthermore, based on evidence-based practice, students will analyze and synthesize the current status and challenges in cancer nursing practice and research, thereby cultivating the ability to contribute to the development of cancer nursing research. Through this program, we aim to foster the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to conduct independent research as scholars, and to train researchers, educators, and practitioners who can contribute to improving the quality of care for cancer patients.
Graduate Career Paths
Nursing university faculty member, specialist cancer nurse, progression to doctoral program, etc.
Message
In the field of cancer nursing, postgraduate students on the master’s thesis course and CNS program can learn organically through mutual encouragement and improvement. We place great importance on cultivating the foundational knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for students to become autonomous as researchers or specialist cancer nurses through the education, research and practice provided in our graduate school. So, let’s learn together!
If you are a doctoral student in the later stages of your program and have a strong desire and motivation to deepen your understanding of patients through research and to improve or transform clinical practice, we invite you to join us in pursuing genuine inquiry through our research.
