“Study Abroad” Defined by Graduate School Rules
Types of study abroad can vary by period, purpose, and organizer. However, “Study Abroad” under the Graduate School Rules and Regulations is approved only when students take regular courses at overseas higher education institutions together with students at the host institution.
Other types of studying abroad such as participation in foreign language training programs are not officially recognized as "Study Abroad," and students are required to take a leave of absence.
Basic Information on Study Abroad
If you are thinking of studying abroad, a good place to start is the International Center website where you can find a comprehensive overview of study abroad. It also contains detailed information on the Keio University Student Exchange Program organized by the International Center.
On the other hand, Faculty-wide exchange programs and Double Masters Degree Programs are organized by the Graduate School of Economics, and eligibility and requirements for these programs are different from those for the university-wide exchange program. Therefore, please be sure to read the information on the webpage for each program.
Major Study Abroad Programs (International Center / Faculty and Graduate School)
Below are major long-term study abroad programs.
Keio University Student Exchange Program (International Center)
Faculty-wide Exchange Programs (Faculty of Economics and Graduate School of Economics)
Double Masters Degree Program with Brandeis University (Graduate School of Economics)
CEMS MIM Programme (Graduate School of Economics, jointly with two other Graduate Schools)
Language Proficiency and Academic Performance
When applying for study abroad, applicants are required to submit documentation demonstrating proficiency in the language of instruction at the host university (i.e., the language used in the courses they plan to take). It is also important to maintain good academic performance. Some partner institutions have specific GPA score requirements.
Academic Fees and Expenses
Under outbound exchange programs, students pay tuition to Keio University, and tuition at the host university is waived. On the other hand, participants in the Double Degree program with Brandeis pay tuition to the host institution while receiving tuition fee exemption from Keio.
In some cases, scholarships may be available from Keio University, the host institution, or the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
Health Insurance
In all study abroad programs, participants are required to enroll in a medical insurance plan such as study abroad health insurance.
Credit Transfer and Enrollment Period Inclusion Procedures
You may apply to have credits earned at the host university transferred and recognized as Keio credits. You may also apply to have your study abroad period included as an enrollment period at Keio. For details, please refer to the Graduate School of Economics Course Registration Guide.
