History of the Faculty of Business and Commerce

The Faculty of Business and Commerce was founded upon the legacy of Yukichi Fukuzawa at Keio University, the oldest private institution of higher learning in Japan. It began as part of the Department of Political Economy and evolved into the Faculty of Business and Commerce as the disciplines of business and commerce matured.

1873

Yukichi Fukuzawa becomes a pioneer of accounting in Japan when he publishes Choai no Ho (lit. “The Methods of Book-Keeping”), a translation of Bryant and Stratton's Counting House Book-keeping

Yukichi Fukuzawa introduced bookkeeping to Japan for the first time when he translated and published Choai no Ho( Fukuzawa Memorial Institute for Modern Japanese Studies)

1890

Keio University establishes the Department of Political Economy, which emphasizes fields related to commerce, in order to provide “useful individuals for the world of business and commerce”

1920

The Department of Political Economy is restructured as the Faculty of Economics with the two separate subject groups in economics and commerce

1938

The Department of Economics and the Department of Business and Commerce are established within the Faculty of Economics

1957

The Faculty of Business and Commerce is established

1961

The Graduate School of Business and Commerce is established
