Research Overview

My research examines why Buddhism, which was formally adopted by the Japanese state from the continent and the Korean Peninsula in the mid-6th century, was subsequently accepted by ancient society and embraced as a faith by the people. This inquiry is approached through Buddhist thought and the relationship between state and society. Additionally, I investigate the formation of Buddhist narrative collections in ancient Japan, comparing them with Chinese Buddhist texts and examining the reception of these writings. Furthermore, I conduct research on illness (and disability), primarily using historical materials such as Buddhist narrative collections.
