Lecture Outline
From the mid-1890s, Japan began to enter a capitalist system, but this brought with it new problems, such as the issue of wealth and poverty, labor issues, and the ethics of businesspeople. How did Fukuzawa, who by this time was coming to be seen as a thinker of a bygone era, consider these issues? This lecture will explore the sympathy and discomfort that Fukuzawa, a theorist of civilization, felt toward capitalism.
