Lecture Outline
Manga artists, especially those who draw so-called single-panel manga, are now nearly an endangered species. You could even call them living fossils. As the number of magazines in the world has decreased and newspapers are read less, single-panel manga, a culture born of leisure, has inevitably lost its place. However, when it comes to freedom of expression, there is no medium that surpasses manga. I would like to talk, for as long as time permits, about the world in all its aspects—past and present, east and west, north and south—as seen through the eyes of such a manga artist.
About the Speaker
1944: Born in Tokyo
1966: Graduated from the Department of Law, Faculty of Law, Keio University
1972: Received the Bungeishunju Manga Award (for his work "War: A Manga History of the Pacific War")
2018: Received the Sankei Children's Book Award Fuji TV Prize (for his work "World Dinosaur Discovery Map")
Alongside his main profession as a manga artist, he has long served as a panelist on the TBS Radio program "National Children's Telephone Counseling Room" and as a reporter for TV programs such as "New World Travelogue," visiting Borneo, Easter Island, South America, Australia, Africa, Inner Mongolia, and Pohnpei. He has also been visiting the African savanna for over 25 years. In search of dinosaur excavation sites, he has explored China, the United States, Canada, and Thailand. He also visits former battlefields whenever he has the chance, incorporating these experiences into his manga. He has been involved with dinosaur excavation in Fukui Prefecture since before the museum's establishment, and for ten years after the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum opened, he served as the chairman of the NPO Fukui Dinosaur Museum Supporters' Association. He also serves as a councilor for the Tokyo Zoological Park Society. His series "Kunihiko Hisa's Anything and Everything Manga Theater" is currently running in Mita-hyoron (official monthly journal published by Keio University Press).
