[Lecture Abstract]
The 1860s and 1870s were a turbulent period not only for Japan during the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration but also for countries around the world. From the 1860s onward, as Japanese people began to travel abroad and intercultural exchanges diversified, what did they acquire and understand, and how did they attempt to convey it back to Japan? How was knowledge elevated into 'Knowledge'? This lecture will explore these questions from both Japanese and British perspectives, focusing on the Iwakura Mission's stay in the United Kingdom.
