Lecture Outline
Looking back now, the cannon fire that echoed while Fukuzawa was lecturing on Wayland's *Elements of Political Economy* was a death knell for the early modern status system. This lecture will describe the social mobilization brought about by the Boshin War and the subsequent era of "risshin" (making a success in life), incorporating a gender history perspective.
