Lecture Outline
In "Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning)," Fukuzawa Yukichi states that "what is written in the book is either a direct translation of the text or a translation of the meaning from various Western books." This lecture will provide an overview of the history of translation in Japan, from the Dutch studies physicians of the Edo period to the translators of Western literature in the Meiji and Taisho periods. It will then examine the culture of translation in modern Japan, including the translation of Wayland's "Shushinron" by Fukuzawa Yukichi and his disciples.
About the Speaker
Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics, Keio University. He is also a member of the Fukuzawa Memorial Center for Modern Japanese Studies at Keio University and a board member (Head of the Linguistics Division) of the Asociación Japonesa de Hispanistas. Born in Spain. After graduating from the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he came to Japan as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholar and obtained his PhD in Japanese Language and Culture from the Graduate School of Language and Culture at Osaka University. After serving as an International Exchange Coordinator at Yamaguchi Prefectural University and an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies at Doshisha University, he was appointed as a full-time lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Keio University, in 2016, and has held his current position since 2020. In 2005, he won first prize in the advanced division of the 14th National Japanese Speech Contest in Barcelona, Spain. His fields of specialization are linguistics, translation studies, and Japanese studies (history of educational thought).
