Five-Year BA/MA Program with the Stevens Institute of Technology

The Faculty of Economics has an agreement with the Stevens Institute of Technology for a combined BA/MA Program. Students enrolled in the Faculty of Economics can apply. Students who satisfy the graduation requirements of both institutions will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from Keio and a Master of Science (MSc) degree from Stevens. Successful applicants are accepted into one of the two graduate school programs of their choice, and the actual title of the master’s degree awarded by Stevens will be a MSc in the respective fields: Financial Analytics or Financial Engineering.

Program Outline

The maximum number of participants is five per year. The study plans for students who participate in this Program are shown in the diagrams below.

For PEARL students, this is a five-year program, with years one through four spent at Keio and years five spent at Stevens.1st round of applications and screening around March of the 3rd year; 2nd round of applications and screening* around November of the 4th year; graduation in the spring semester of the 4th year (earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Keio University); graduation in the spring semester of the 5th year (earning a master's degree from Stevens Institute of Technology).Type A and B students are part of a 5.5-year program, studying at Keio from year 1 to year 4, and spending the fall of their fifth year and sixth year at Stevens.1st round of applications and screening around March of the 3rd year; second round of applications and screening* around November of the 4th year; graduation in the fall semester of the 4th year (earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Keio); graduation in the spring semester of the 6th year (earning a master's degree from Stevens ).

1. Type A/B students refers to students whose study at Keio begins in April and whose principal language of instruction is Japanese.

2. Students have the chance to apply twice (1a and 1b above).

About the Stevens Institute of Technology

Stevens Institute of Technology, founded in 1870, is a prominent private research university with a strength in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Located in Hoboken, New Jersey, overlooking the Manhattan skyline, the school is known for its excellent job placement record. Graduates of Master’s programs in finance-related fields have utilized their skills and expertise in such careers as data scientists, research analysts, and financial analysts.

Eligibility and Application Guideline

Applicants must satisfy the following requirements at the time they apply for this program:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in the Faculty of Economics and have successfully completed five semesters (for PEARL students) and six semesters (for Type A/B students);

  • have a TOEFL iBT score of 90 or more or an IELTS score of 7.0 or more*;

  • a minimum Grade Point Average (cumulative GPA) of 2.3; and

  • satisfy the following course requirements:

    have earned, or be expected to earn, credits for four Keio courses (a total of 8 Keio credits) that are transferable to Stevens**. These credits may not be counted toward the 126 credits required for graduation at Keio, as they must be registered as Optional Courses. Moreover, the grade for all of the four courses must be “B” or higher.

*Admission may be granted to applicants with scores below the required level, on the condition that they participate in an English language support program.

*PEARL students are exempted from this English requirement.

**The list below shows the courses whose credits are typically transferrable to Stevens. The 8 Keio credits are recognized as being equivalent to a total of 9 Steven credits. Students will complete the remaining 21 of the 30 credits required for graduation from Stevens over two semesters in order to complete the master’s program.

Screening

Applicants will be evaluated based on their application documents and an interview.

Selection Schedule

The first round (March) is for students enrolled in their third year, and the second round (November) is for students enrolled in their fourth year. Applicants pre-selected by Keio can proceed to the final selection by applying to Stevens.

*While successful students become a program candidate, they need to satisfy the conditions for credit transfer in order to be officially admitted to Stevens.

Academic Fees

Students from Keio will pay their tuition fees to Stevens while studying there. (A 30% discount of tuition is applicable to BA/MA program participants.*)
