I have focused my research on the environment surrounding children. However, I feel every day that defining a "good environment" is extremely difficult. When conducting research, it is necessary to clarify what kind of person we want children to become. Yet, because every child is unique, it is hard to limit this to a single definition. Furthermore, I have struggled with the fact that perspectives differ depending on whether the focus is on all children or specific groups, such as children with illnesses.
To understand what is important for children's environments, I conduct research alongside various child specialists. Since everyone thinks seriously about children and wishes for their happiness, there is much to learn from them. Through this, I have come to feel that an environment that is good for specific groups of children is also a good environment for all children. From those working at inclusive childcare centers, I learned that while the number of professionals is important, believing in the children and engaging with them sincerely creates a better environment for children with and without disabilities, as well as for their respective caregivers.
I also learned the importance of supporting caregivers. My previous research has shown that children of caregivers who have someone to talk to about parenting exhibit better social development. Specialists have taught me that the quantity and quality of support vary depending on the situation of the caregiver and the child. Talking about children or consulting about parenting difficulties is important for all caregivers. On the other hand, for single mothers who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic and are at a loss, or for caregivers of children who use ventilators and require phlegm suctioning every hour, it is necessary not only to listen to them but also to connect them with the required assistance. While the quantity and quality of support differ in these ways, they are the same in terms of supporting the caregiver. It can be said that support tailored to each individual is crucial.
The Children and Families Agency will be established next April. To achieve one of its basic principles, "the healthy growth and improvement of well-being for all children," we must create a good environment for children and support all children and their families. I intend to conduct the necessary research to help realize such a society.
