"Reducing global blindness by 50% and protecting people's health through their eyes." This statement, which may sound grand at first glance, is the mission of OUI Inc., a venture originating from the Department of Ophthalmology at the Keio University School of Medicine. OUI Inc. researches, develops, commercializes, and sells the "Smart Eye Camera," a medical device that enables ophthalmological examinations via smartphone. We are expanding widely into areas such as telemedicine and AI development, working toward our mission with partners in 30 countries worldwide.

I have been part of Keio University since entering the Keio Futsubu School. During my time at Keio Senior High School, I discovered ice hockey in the hockey division of the Skating Team, and after entering the School of Medicine, I remained in the Skating Team of the School of Medicine Athletic Association. After graduation, I joined the Department of Ophthalmology, where I remain a member as of 2023. Additionally, since my grandfather practiced in Yokohama, I also provide medical care at my family's eye clinic, "Yokohama Keiai Eye Clinic."

I am often asked why I, an ophthalmologist, started a startup and how I can continue to pursue my dreams. I believe the background lies in the influence of The Mission of Keio University to be a "source of honorable character" and "a paragon of intellect and morals for the entire nation," as well as the Keio University spirit of "jitsugaku (science)."

Immediately after entering the Keio Futsubu School, there was an exam to recite the philosophy and mission. At the time, I didn't really understand what it was all about, but looking back now, I don't think I would be who I am today without that early imprinting of the philosophy and mission.

To challenge grand dreams, a startup adopts the motto of "creating history oneself" (jigo-sakko) and approaches matters with a spirit of independence and self-respect. Because it is not a subdivided organization like a large corporation, it is necessary to learn from everyone regardless of their position—whether they are "learning while teaching, teaching while learning" advisors or new employees (for someone like me who has only received an education in medical sciences, there is nothing but things to learn from graduates of other faculties). Furthermore, to build an organization, it is necessary to engage in "Keio Gijuku Shachu" cooperation with Keio University alumni from other faculties. I believe the philosophy of Keio University applies perfectly to the situation I find myself in.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Emeritus Kazuo Tsubota of the Department of Ophthalmology, who allowed me to follow a path slightly different from the royal road of a physician and who continues to value the diversity of the department and support me. I also wish to express my heartfelt thanks to Professor Kazuno Negishi of the same department, and to Dr. Yoko Ogawa, former Project Associate Professor of the department, who 100% accepted my selfishness when I was a graduate student at the time of the company's founding.

At the same time, without forgetting the spirit of Keio University and without setting limits on myself, I will work harder and harder!
