Museums
Over its history of more than 160 years, Keio University has formed a collection of cultural properties spanning diverse fields. These collections, which include several Important Cultural Properties, are stored and utilized in various locations throughout Keio University. At campus museums and exhibition spaces, unique exhibitions that leverage specialized expertise are held, and classes using cultural properties are also conducted.
The Keio Museum Commons is a university museum that interconnects the Juku's collections and creates interaction among the people involved with them. Additionally, the Fukuzawa Yukichi Memorial Keio History Museum exhibits the life of the founder, Fukuzawa, and the 160-year history of Keio University.
Keio Museum Commons
The Keio Museum Commons (abbreviated as KeMCo) is located in the East Annex of the Mita Campus. It houses cultural properties and academic materials accumulated by the Juku, as well as artworks donated by the Century Cultural Foundation. As a museum for a new era, KeMCo builds an environment where analog and digital merge. It serves as a hub for sharing Keio University's art and culture with society through activities such as exhibitions, events, lectures, research, and digital archives.
Fukuzawa Yukichi Memorial Keio History Museum
The Fukuzawa Yukichi Memorial Keio History Museum is located on the 2nd floor of the Old University Library on the Mita Campus. It exhibits the life of the founder, Fukuzawa, and the 160-year history of Keio University. The permanent exhibition consists of four chapters: "Chapter of Fresh Breezes: The Departure of Fukuzawa Yukichi," "Chapter of Wisdom and Courage: The Creation of Civilization and the Power of Learning," "Chapter of Independence and Self-Respect: The Pride and Struggles of a Private Institution," and "Chapter of Jinkan Kosai (Society): Men and Women, Family, the Juku, and Society." The facility emphasizes the display of actual historical materials and allows visitors to learn about modern and contemporary Japanese history through the history of the Juku.
Keio University Art Center (KUAC)
The Keio University Art Center (KUAC), which holds special exhibitions throughout the year at the Art Space on the 1st floor of the South Annex, also manages various artistic archival materials. It is the only facility at Keio University designated as a museum-equivalent facility. In addition to holding exhibitions on contemporary art and architecture, it presents research results from its archives, including those of Tatsumi Hijikata, in exhibition format. Beyond exhibitions, it provides points of contact with art through various events such as gallery talks related to exhibitions, Butoh performances based on the archives, and architectural tours.
