Keio University provides scholarships to international students so that they can focus on their studies without financial worry.

Scholarship Types

Scholarships are broadly divided into the following: those offered by Keio University, those offered by public organizations such as the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), and those from scholarship sponsors such as private companies and scholarship foundations.

Internal Scholarships

Keio University provides various benefit-type scholarships that meet the needs of the students and do not require repayment.
The following is a summary of scholarships available to undergraduate and graduate students.

Merit-Based Scholarships TopDown

This scholarship is intended for second-year students or above of excellent character and academic grades with a strong motivation to study, but are recognized as having financial difficulties.

  • Application period (scheduled): Late September-October
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): about 310 students (including Japanese students)
  • Scholarship amount: 500,000 or 250,000 yen per year
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)

This scholarship is intended for privately financed international students from Asia who are new first-year students in the undergraduate program.

  • Application period (scheduled): April
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): about 10 students
  • Scholarship amount: 700,000 yen per year (Faculties of Letters, Economics, Law, and Business and Commerce); 900,000 yen per year (all other faculties)
  • Scholarship period: one year

This scholarship is intended for privately financed international students from Asia of excellent character and academic grades, and furthermore are in need of financial aid.

  • Application period (scheduled): April
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): about 40 students (including undergraduate and graduate students)
  • Scholarship amount: 500,000 yen per year
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)

This scholarship is intended for students of excellent character and academic grades with a strong motivation to study, but are having difficulty devoting to their studies due to financial reasons. Students have to be recognized as needing financial aid to continue studying as international students.

  • Application period (scheduled): April
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): about 10 students (including undergraduate and graduate students)
  • Scholarship amount: 500,000 yen per year
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)

This scholarship is set up using donations from many individuals who are connected to the university, such as Mita-kai (alumni association) members.

  • Application period (scheduled): April–May
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): a few
  • Scholarship amount: different for each scholarship
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)
Need-Based Scholarships TopDown

This scholarship is intended for students who are highly motivated to study, but due to a sudden change in their household finances (includes being victims of large-scale natural disasters) or a life of continuous poverty, are having difficulties continuing their studies.

  • Application period (scheduled): Late May-June and November
  • Number of undergraduate student recipients (scheduled): about 100 students (including Japanese students, and graduate students)
  • Scholarship amount: within the amount of the tuition fee
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)

This scholarship is set up using donations from many individuals who are connected to the university, such as Mita-kai (alumni association) members.

  • Application period (scheduled): April–May
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): a few
  • Scholarship amount: different for each scholarship
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)
Pre-Admission Scholarships TopDown

This award is intended for students who will enroll in our master's program, doctoral program, or professional degree program at Keio University. Application conditions and period are different for each graduate school.

  • Application period (scheduled): different for each graduate school
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): a few
  • Scholarship amount: tuition fee in full; 200,000 yen per month for living expenses; and a one-off payment of 150,000 yen to prepare for your studies abroad including airfare
  • Scholarship period: two years for the master's program, three years for the doctoral program
Merit-Based Scholarships TopDown

This scholarship is intended for graduate students of excellent character and academic grades who are motivated to do research, but face difficulties studying for financial reasons.

  • Application period (scheduled): Late September-October
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): about 60 students
  • Scholarship amount: 500,000 yen per year
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)

This scholarship is intended for privately financed international students from Asia of excellent character and academic grades, and furthermore are in need of financial aid.

  • Application period (scheduled): April
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): about 40 students (including undergraduate and graduate students)
  • Scholarship amount: 500,000 yen per year
  • Scholarship period: one year (you may reapply)

This scholarship is intended for privately financed international students from Asia of excellent character and academic grades, who are in their final year of the doctoral program and need to extend their period of enrollment.

  • Application period (scheduled): April
  • Number of recipients (scheduled): a few
  • Scholarship amount: dissertation guidance fee
  • Scholarship period: one year

This scholarship is intended for students of excellent character and academic grades with a strong motivation to study, but are having difficulty devoting to their studies due to financial reasons. Government Scholarships
(For Both Undergraduate
and Graduate Students)

Information regarding scholarships offered by the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT) and Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) can be found here.

This scholarship is provided by the Japanese government (MEXT). It is offered to students with excellent academic grades.

  • Application period (2022): December (in AY 2021) and May (in AY 2022)
  • Number of recipients (2022): about 20 students
  • Scholarship amount: ① exemption of tuition fees, ② monthly allowance of 117,000–145,000 yen
  • Scholarship period: up to one year

This scholarship is provided by JASSO. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote the development of educational exchange, mutual understanding, peace, and friendship between foreign countries and Japan. It is intended for students with excellent character and academic grades, who furthermore have difficulty continuing their studies due to financial reasons.

  • Application period (scheduled): April and September
  • Number of recipients: 129 undergraduate students, 50 graduate students (number in AY 2022)
  • Scholarship amount: 48,000 yen per month
  • Scholarship period: one year

Private Organization and Local
Government Scholarships
(For Both Undergraduate
and Graduate Students)

Many organizations, such as incorporated foundations, public interest incorporated foundations, private companies, and prefectural and local governments offer scholarships.
For many scholarships, once you have been selected, you will continue to receive funds until graduation.

Application and Selection for Scholarships

There are some scholarships for which you will need to get a recommendation from the university before you can apply. For others, you can apply directly to the organization without going through the university.
To apply for scholarships, you have to go through a scholarship applicant registration process twice a year, at the start of the Spring and Fall Semesters.

  • Top Global University Project

    With the aim of bolstering the international competitiveness of Japanese higher education, Keio University was selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for the Top Global University Project as one of Japan's top universities that provides a world-class level of research and education and is dedicated to thorough internationalization through university reform and collaboration with leading universities around the world. This provides international students studying at Keio University with more opportunities to apply for Japanese government (MEXT) scholarships.

  • Biggest Scholarship Fund in Japan:
    24 Billion Yen

    Keio University is increasing its scholarship fund even more. At 24 billion yen, the university's scholarship fund is the largest in Japan and will be used for scholarships that are not required to be repaid. Keio University is actively working to stabilize the source of its scholarship fund.

  • "Design the Future" Award for International Students

    The purpose of this scholarship is to invite outstanding international students to Keio University and develop them into individuals with a global mind who will lead the future of humanity. It is a special scholarship which in addition to paying the full academic fees and expenses necessary to be enrolled at Keio University, also provides monthly payments to cover living expenses as well as a one-off payment at the time of admission.   • Generous Internal Scholarships for Privately Financed International Students

    The university established its own scholarship program for international students to provide generous support to privately financed international students.

  • Scholarships from Donations from Alumni and Other Benefactors

    The appeal of Keio University is that the spirit of shachu kyoryoku, collaboration within the company, has taken root. Various alumni associations (Mita-kai) formed by jukuin, or Keio alumni, and other benefactors make donations to the university for the purpose of awarding scholarships. There are many scholarships international students can apply for.

  • Need-based: Keio University Degree Completion Scholarship

    There are many reasons why students have financial difficulties, including sudden changes in household finances and lack of steady income. The scholarship is intended to provide financial support to a broad scope of students experiencing financial difficulties regardless of the nature or origin of such difficulties to ensure students who aspire to study do not lose the opportunity to do so for financial reasons.
