The Spring 2016 Undergraduate Entrance Ceremony was held on Friday, April 1, at the Hiyoshi Commemorative Hall. This Spring Semester, Keio welcomed a total of 6,618 students, including students entering the Japanese Language Program.
Keio University held two entrance ceremonies to accommodate student numbers—one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning ceremony was held for the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Business and Commerce, Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Japanese Language Program; and the afternoon ceremony was held for the Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Economics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Policy Management, Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, and Faculty of Pharmacy. In addition, every year, 50th anniversary alumni are invited to the entrance ceremony, and this year many Keio alumni of the class of 1966 were in attendance.
To open each ceremony, Vice-President Akira Haseyama gave the Incoming Class Report, followed by a welcome address by President Atsushi Seike in both Japanese and English. He spoke of Keio’s founding principles and encouraged the new students to develop the ability to think for themselves. A congratulatory address was then delivered on behalf of faculty and staff members by Prof. Kohei Itoh of the Faculty of Science and Technology (morning), and by Prof. Kiyoka Nozue of the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care (afternoon). Incoming class representatives, Kohei Yamamuro of the Faculty of Law (morning) and Airi Tanabe of the Faculty of Economics (afternoon) gave speeches expressing their joy of entering Keio University and their aspirations for university life. There was a presentation of donations and a celebratory address by representatives of the "107-Nen Mita-kai" (Class of 1966), and the Alma Mater, "The Juku-ka," was sung by all those in attendance.
With the cherry blossoms in full bloom, Hiyoshi Campus was brimming with new students, their families, and an air of excitement and celebration all around.
