Celebrating 125 Years Since the Establishment of the First University Departments at Keio University, Keio Delegation Visits Harvard University

Update:Mar. 23, 2015

For the event marking the 125th year since the founding of the first university departments at Keio University, eleven faculty and staff members in total including President Seike, Vice-President Komamura, and Vice-President Kokuryo paid a visit to Harvard University in Cambridge, USA, on the 5th of March.

The history between Keio and Harvard dates back to 1890, when then-President of Harvard, Charles Eliot, nominated three professors to head Keio’s first three university departments of literature, economics, and law.

This visit was made possible thanks to the cooperation of Harvard’s Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies and the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.

On the historic Harvard campus where mounds of snow adorned the sidewalks, President Seike met with Harvard President Drew Faust before giving a lecture titled “Japan’s Aging Society and the Role of Higher Education” to a large audience which included many researchers and students. The Keio delegation then visited the Harvard University Archives to see valuable documents and resources related to the history of the two universities, including a letter written by Yukichi Fukuzawa to President Eliot, requesting his assistance in nominating the professors. After a tour of the campus, a dinner was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere providing a welcome opportunity for researchers to socialize and deepen exchanges.
The following day on the 6th, Keio staff members held study abroad information sessions at both Harvard University and Boston University.
