On Tuesday, March 3, the International President’s Forum “Science to Strengthen a Super-Mature Society” was held at Mita Campus. This forum, called for by President Atsushi Seike and Vice-President Toshiaki Makabe, was held with the objective to discuss the fostering of highly-skilled human resources who can contribute to sustainable development on a global scale as well as the mission of research institutions in the face of a super mature society that will soon affect not merely Japan, but the whole world.

Participants included the following people from world-leading institutions: President of the University of Tokyo, Junichi Hamada; Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, Andrew Hamilton (Ms. Alison Beale, Director of the University of Oxford Japan Office, attended on his behalf.); President of The National University of Singapore, Tan Chorh Chuan; Director of École Centrale de Nantes (France), Arnaud Poitou; Professor Zoran Petrović, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Representing Keio was President Seike and Vice-President Makabe, and the forum was chaired by Professor Kannari Fumihiko from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Coordinator of the Keio Program for Leading Graduate School (All-Round) “Science for Development of Super Mature Society.”

At the start of the forum there was an introduction of each institution and its recent initiatives. Then, President Seike brought some issues to the floor and there was a spirited debate on how to expand academic disciplines and promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research among researchers. Furthermore, the participants agreed on the point that, as research institutions, it is essential to maintain basic research based on researchers’ strong intellectual curiosity.

The entirety of the 2-hour forum is planned for publication in April this year.
