Update:Jan. 14, 2015

On Tuesday, December 16, 2014, Keio University Law School and the University of Washington School of Law co-hosted the International Symposium “How should law be taught in the globalizing world?” at the North Building, Mita Campus. This symposium gathered international law experts from around the world to foster discussions on legal education from the perspective of Japan and Asia in this age of globalization. In 2014, Keio University was selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for the Top Global University Project (Top Type). The structure of Keio's project consists of three research initiatives that integrate the humanities and the sciences: namely Longevity, Security and Creativity. This was also Keio’s Security Initiative Kick-off Symposium, and it was conducted entirely in English.

President Atsushi Seike opened the symposium with a welcome speech, followed by greetings from Prof. Yutaka Oishi, Dean of Keio University Faculty of Law, Prof. Naoya Katayama, Dean of Keio University Law School, and Prof. Patricia Kuszler, Vice Dean of University of Washington School of Law. Prof. David Kennedy from Harvard Law School and Prof. Michael Young, President of the University of Washington, then took the floor to offer their keynote speeches. Following were presentations by researchers from Yonsei University (Korea), Sungkyunkwan University (Korea), Seoul National University (Korea), the Centre for Asian Legal Studies at the University of British Columbia (Canada), and the National Taiwan University (Taiwan), after which various workshops were held in a different venue.

The participants of the symposium were engrossed in each session and engaged in active discussions, even during the coffee breaks, until the symposium was brought to a successful conclusion.
