Keio University’s Honorary Degree of Economics Conferred Upon Prof. Kap-Young Jeong, President of Yonsei University

A ceremony to confer the degree of Doctor of Economics, honoris causa, upon Prof. Kap-Young Jeong, President of Yonsei University, was held from 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 5 in the Public Speaking Hall, Mita Campus.

Keio University conferred the honorary degree in appreciation of his significant contributions to academia, and policy and society through his research in the fields of industrial organization and public policy, and in recognition of his dedication to strengthening academic exchanges between Japan and Korea, and the strategic partnership with Keio University.

Keio University and Yonsei University have a longstanding partnership stretching over forty years. Launched in 2008, the 3-Campus Comparative East Asian Studies Program between Yonsei University, the University of Hong Kong, and Keio University has been highly successful. Yonsei University and Keio University have developed a wide-ranging and deep relationship including the exchange of students and faculty, and academic exchange through the implementation of double degree programs, establishment of overseas offices on respective campuses, as well as regular sports matches between the universities. Furthermore, in October 2011, Keio University also conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor to the then-President of Yonsei, Prof. Han-Joong Kim.

At the ceremony, Prof. Jeong made his entrance to the sounds of the Wagner Society Chorus. With Prof. Sahoko Kaji of the Faculty of Economics presiding, Prof. Shinsuke Nakamura, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, gave the reading of the citation. President Seike then presented the diploma to Prof. Jeong and delivered a congratulatory address, after which Prof. Jeong showed his appreciation in his acceptance speech. The ceremony was followed by the commemorative lecture by Prof. Jeong on the theme “The Yonsei Paradigm: An Architecture for Private Higher Education in Asia.” A large audience gathered and listened to his lecture enthusiastically.
