Keio University confers the Honorary Degree of Doctor on Professor Marcel K. Richter

At 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 3, Keio University conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor upon Prof. Marcel K. Richter, Professor of the University of Minnesota, during a ceremony at the Mita Public Speaking Hall (Mita Enzetsu-kan).

Keio University decided to confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor upon Prof. Richter in appreciation of his significant contributions to the development of economic theory and his dedicated efforts to establish a cooperative research relationship between the University of Minnesota and Keio University in the field of theoretical economics.

At the ceremony, Prof. Richter made his entrance to the sounds of the Wagner Society Chorus. With Prof. Takako Greve of the Faculty of Economics presiding, Prof. Shinsuke Nakamura, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, read aloud the citation for Professor Richter. Following this, President Seike presented the doctorate to Prof. Richter and delivered an address, after which Prof. Andrew McLennan of the University of Queensland gave a congratulatory speech in honor of his old friend. The ceremony concluded with Prof. Richter's acceptance address, in which he spoke of his close relationship with Keio University.

Prof. Richter was born in 1932 in New York, U.S.. After acquiring his Ph.D. in Industrial Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1959, he began his career at Brandeis University and then moved to the University of Minnesota, where he was appointed professor in 1968. Prof. Richter was elected as a Fellow of the Econometric Society in 1975 and has also actively played a leading role in his field as a member of the editorial boards of the major scientific journals on mathematical economics. In the course of his teaching career, Professor Richter has successfully mentored many talented economists. He has supervised the Ph.D. theses of around 30 researchers, including a number of the faculty members of Keio University.

Following the conferring ceremony, the venue was moved to the Keio University Library (Old Building) Main Hall, where Prof. Richter gave a commemorative lecture entitled "Foundations of Political Economy and Social Ethics" to a large audience of students and faculty members.
