Keio University Confers the Honorary Degree of Doctor upon Professor Patrick Chedmail

At 1:30 PM on October 26 (Fri.), Keio University conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor upon Professor Patrick Chedmail, former Director of the École Centrale de Nantes (ECN), during a ceremony at Keio's Public Speaking Hall on Mita Campus.

Keio University decided to confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor upon Prof. Chedmail in appreciation of his outstanding scholarly achievements in robotics, computer-aided mechanical design and manufacturing, and operations research. Prof. Chedmail was also honored for his remarkable contributions to the development of the international exchange programs of Keio University, including the conclusion of the double degree program agreement between the Écoles Centrales Group and Keio.

With Prof. Kyoko Ohara of the Faculty of Science and Technology presiding over the ceremony, Prof. Tojiro Aoyama, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, read aloud the citation for Prof. Chedmail. Following this, President Seike presented the doctorate to Prof. Chedmail and delivered an address. In response, Prof. Chedmail noted his appreciation to Keio University in an acceptance address.

Following the conferring ceremony, the venue was moved to the North Hall, where Prof. Chedmail gave a commemorative lecture titled “École Centrale de Nantes and Keio University: a 25 years partnership in a changing scientific and academic world”. Students, former participants of international exchange programs, faculty members, and staff attended the lecture and listened intently to what Prof. Chedmail had to say.

From 15:30 PM, representatives from both institutions took part in a "Ceremony Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Collaboration Between École Centrale de Nantes (ECN) and Keio University", including addresses from Keio University Vice-President Toshiaki Makabe and Prof. Arnaud Poitou, the current Director of ECN, and the exchange of commemorative gifts. In the symposium that followed the ceremony, Prof. Fouad Bennis (ECN) and Prof. Shinnosuke Obi (Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology) gave presentations on the development and current progress of international exchange. Later, a panel discussion on the same topic was held by Prof. Bennis, two students from the inaugural class of the exchange program with ECN (Mr. and Mrs. Raison), Prof. Kohei Itoh of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and Prof. Obi. Members of the audience also took part in the lively dialogue that ensued about the experiences gained from participating in international exchange programs.
