The 20th Anniversary Ceremony of Keio Academy of New York

Update:Nov. 22, 2010

Keio Academy of New York is proud to celebrate its 20th anniversary this fall, 2010. Based on the education concept, “Bilingual and Bicultural”, Keio Academy of New York has been developing as a unique educational institution in the United States for all of these years. Founded in 1990 and accredited by the New York State Board of Regents, Keio Academy is also authorized as an overseas educational institution by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in Japan. It is the only school affiliated with Keio University that exists in a foreign country. Among Keio Academy’s more than 1800 graduates, there are many professionals who are working overseas, which we proudly see is the embodiment of our mission, “Educating the Future Leaders of a Global Community”.

In these past 20 years Keio Academy has experienced epic challenges of historic import. Following the collapse of the bubble economy in Japan, the number of Japanese expatriates living in foreign countries decreased drastically. A decade later the disaster of “September Eleven”, left the former image of New York City compromised. In terms of recruitment and management these translated into difficult times for Keio Academy of New York. That Keio Academy has emerged as strong and successful today as it has proven itself to be is a testament to all of those persons, students, parents, teachers and staff, who have participated in the school and given part of themselves to it.

As the global era of education has evolved in recent years, the background of the Keio Academy’s student body has started to get more diversified than before, having students come not only from North America and Japan, but also from all over the world such as Europe, South East Asia, Middle East, South America and Africa. A scholarship designated for Japanese American students was set forth and more students are getting admitted from international schools so that more English-oriented students are seeking enrollment. Moving forward with these trends, through the new online system KANYOS (Keio Academy of New York Online System), the communication among students, teachers and parents who are scattered everywhere in the world, rapidly became smoother and more efficient, which created a virtual Keio Academy of New York community on the global scale. In addition, new approaches in the Outreach Program have expanded activities that allowed students to interact with local communities and to have more opportunities to share the American experience, culture.

Regardless of global trends or changes in economic situations, Keio Academy of New York has found itself in step with the world of today by pursuing consistently the initial mission statements of twenty years ago. Following the traditions of Keio University, to foster Independence and self-respect, we now celebrate our 20th anniversary. A ceremony was held on November 18th Thursday on campus where approximately 500 people attended. It served as an opportunity for all to look back to the starting point of our education, to reaffirm its value and to share the founding spirit of Keio.
