A ceremony to confer honorary degree of doctor upon Professor Fritz Klocke was held on October 28 at Public Speaking Hall, Mita Campus.

Prof. Fritz Klocke received his engineering doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin in 1982, and served as chief engineer at the same institute. He worked in industry in Hamburg for some years and was called to the RWTH Aachen University as Professor of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology in 1995, and in 2001 he was elected as the Dean of the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering. Since then, he has been served as the Chair of Manufacturing Technology at the university, and head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen.

Prof. Klocke has proven to be an outstanding researcher, and has also nurtured young researchers as well as serving as a bridge for the industrial world. Prof. Klocke has contributed to the exchange between Keio and RWTH Aachen, and organized the Keio-Aachen Summer School, which has become an annual event since 2007. At the Summer School, many Keio students have studied German language, culture and engineering.

The ceremony was chaired by Prof. Kyoko Inoue of Faculty of Science and Technology and with the songs by Wagner Society Chorus, Prof. Klocke walked into the hall. Following the reading of the citation for Prof. Klocke by Professor Tojiro Aoyama, Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology . Then President Atsushi Seike presented the diploma of Doctorate Honoris Causa to Prof. Klocke. President Seike delivered an address, and in response, Prof. Klocke showed his appreciation to Keio University.

After the ceremony, Prof. Klocke gave a lecture titled "Adaptive Production- A Challenge for the Future" regarding challenges of manufacturing technology and advanced technology.

The students who studied at RWTH Aachen presented a bouquet to Prof. Klocke after the lecture, then Keio students were photographed with Prof. Klocke in a conciliatory mood.
