The Graduate School of System Design and Management (SDM) and the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) of Delft University of Technology (TUD) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), and the Graduate School of Media Design (KMD) and Department of Industrial Design of Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, October 26 at Hiyoshi Campus, Keio University. Dr. Ronald Plasterk, Minister of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands visited Hiyoshi Campus, and joined the signing ceremony.

Prof. Atsushi Seike, President of Keio University and Prof. Toshiaki Makabe, Vice President, also attended the ceremony. In the beginning, President Seike delivered a speech: “Keio University has from its beginning a strong relation with the study of western sciences by means of the Dutch language. In order to obtain further knowledge concerning the “West”, the founder of Keio University, Yukichi Fukuzawa, learned the Dutch language, and in 1858, founded a private school in Edo that conducted studies in Dutch. It was 1609 when the Shogun Ieyasu, who, after Japan’s long period of war had made Japan a peaceful nation again, gave a special ”trade pass” to the Netherlands. Thus, 2009 is the year of celebration for 400 years of economic relations between our two countries. I believe that these two comprehensive partnership agreements will further deepen the amicable relationship between the Netherlands and Japan.”

Before the signing ceremony, Minister Plasterk observed the demonstration of SDM and KMD. Minister Plasterk showed a great interest especially in the system development for solving social issues.

It is hoped that the partnership agreements will lead to successful outcome of joint research.
