Spring Commencement 2012
Keio University held its Undergraduate Commencement at the Hiyoshi Commemorative Hall on March 23, 2012, graduating a total of 6,489 students from its 10 undergraduate faculties. Among this year’s graduates were 264 students from correspondence courses.
The ceremony began with Vice-President Akira Haseyama’s Graduating Class Report and continued with the conferment of diplomas and awards by President Atsushi Seike. President Seike then addressed Keio’s newest graduates, encouraging them in their future endeavors. Following a congratulatory speech from Alumni Representative Dr. Yoshiki Hiki, chairperson of Keio University School of Medicine’s Sanshikai (alumni association), third-year student Ikkei Osawa of Faculty of Law represented all current Keio students in sending off this year’s graduates. Fourth-year student Fukiko Okai of Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care gave an address on behalf of the graduating class.
After the ceremony had finished, many other events ensued: degree conferment by faculty, a reception for 25th anniversary alumni(Juku-in), the Koizumi Sports Award celebration, a ceremony for Honor Students, and a celebration for graduates of the correspondence courses, among others.
This Spring Commencement was the first in two years, since last year’s ceremony was cancelled in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Graduates, family members, and alumni celebrating their 25th anniversary of graduation filled Hiyoshi campus despite the rainy weather. Many people even stayed after the ceremony to take photographs.
