2006 Open Campus events: prospective students gather from all over Japan
Keio University’s Open Campus events were held again this year with the majority being held throughout the summer holiday period. Various events and seminars were held at each campus for prospective students and current high school students.
General Open Campus events featuring all faculties were held for prospective students at the Mita campus on Sunday, July 30 and at the Hiyoshi campus on Friday, August 18. A separate event was held for prospective Faculty of Science and Technology students at the Yagami campus on Friday, August 18. Open Campus events were also held at the Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) on Thursday, July 27 and Saturday, August 19 for students wishing to enter one of the three faculties at SFC.
The Open Campus event jointly held by the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environmental Information at SFC featured faculty information sessions hosted by the Deans of each faculty and mock classes incorporating SFC’s unique style of group work. An information processing seminar entitled “The Next-Generation Internet at SFC”, held on Thursday, July 27, showcased SFC’s efforts to create an Internet society of the future. The Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care showed prospective students how to hold newborn babies and participants showed a high level of interest in all aspects of the event.
The general Open Campus event at Mita was a great success with over 8,500 attendees, despite temperatures exceeding 30C. Information sessions and mock classes for each faculty were so popular that it was standing room only in most venues. Individual consultation booths were also available and many participants were keen to ask questions about student life and other issues. The Cheerleading Club held a cheerleading demonstration in the central courtyard in front of a very appreciative audience. A similar general Open Campus event was held in August at the Hiyoshi campus and large numbers of high school students arrived early in the morning for their chance to participate in mock classes and information sessions. Current students provided campus tours to show visitors useful facilities such as the library and the Student Union Building. The student tour guides shared their entrance exam experiences and some gave advice to prospective students about studying at university. One participant even asked the students if they ever get lost on such a big campus.
As with other events, the Open Campus event held for prospective Faculty of Science and Technology students at the Yagami campus included information sessions, mock classes, individual consultations and pamphlets.12 courses of tours were held regularly throughout the day and each groups of ten were able to visit two research labs. Participants had the unique opportunity to visit university research labs and see experimental equipment and everyone showed keen interest in their chosen fields. The event gave prospective students the chance to imagine their future lives on campus.
In addition to these events, campus tours and university information sessions are held annually from May until October at the Mita and Hiyoshi campuses and university entrance consultation sessions are held at locations throughout Japan.
