World Leaders Gathered at Keio for World Economic Forum's Global Risk Workshop

On June 14, The World Economic Forum (WEF) "Global Risk Network" Workshop, a pre-workshop for the June 15-16 WEF on East Asia conference, was held at the Global Security Research Institute (G-SEC) Lab on Keio University's Mita campus. This was the WEF's first ever meeting in Japan as well as its first to be held at a university.

The workshop began with opening remarks by Prof. Tatsuya Sakamoto, Vice-President for International Collaboration and Education. Moderated by Mr. Yoshinori Imai, Exective Editor of NHK, and Prof. Thierry Malleret, Senior Director of the WEF, top leaders from around the world actively discussed various global risk issues. Participants from Keio University included Prof. Jiro Tamura (Faculty of Law), Prof. Yoshihide Soeya (Faculty of Law), Prof. Fukunari Kimura (Faculty of Economics), and Prof. Naoyuki Yoshino (Faculty of Economics). About 20 Keio students from the Faculty and Graduate School of Law and the Graduate School of Economics audited the workshop with keen interest.

Following the workshop, a reception was co-hosted by Keio University and University of Tokyo in the East Building Hall. Joining the workshop participants there were Mr. Jean-Pierre Rosso, Chairman of the Centre for Global Industries, WEF, Prof. Hiroshi Komiyama, President of the University of Tokyo, and Prof. Katsuhiko Shirai, President of Waseda University. After opening addresses by President Anzai and President Komiyama, guests mingled and talked in a friendly atmosphere, accompanied by music performed by students from the Keio University Wagner Society.

In the "How Risky Is Asia?" session on June 16, Prof.Tamura reported a summary of GRN Workshop that a more open dialogues among Asia’s politicians need to be promoted to manage ever-increasing risks facing Asia. President Anzai, participated in "Orders to Innovate: Can It Be Done in Asia?" session, and Prof.Kokuryo (Faculty of Policy Management), participated in "Asia's Digital Eco-Systems: Convergence of the Fittest?" session, also discussed the issues of concern with other participants around the world.
