Keio participates in 4th China-Japan University Presidents Forum and partners with 3 Chinese universities

Update:Jun. 07, 2006

The 4th China-Japan University Presidents Forum was held in Xi'an, China from May 10th-11th. Established in 2000 to promote and strengthen academic ties, the Forum invites Chinese and Japanese leaders in Higher Education to actively debate and exchange ideas on increasing exchange and encouraging joint activities, particularly scientific research, between the two countries. Chinese and Japanese education ministries have been involved in the forum since 2003.

Keio University was represented by President Yuichiro Anzai and Prof. Tatsuya Sakamoto, Vice-President for International Collaboration and Education, and delegations from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Tokyo, Kyoto and Waseda universities, and eleven other Japanese universities and institutions participated in the event. From China, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Beijing, Tsinghua, Fudan, and Xi'an Jiaotong universities, and eleven other universities and institutions joined the forum.

Keio also took this opportunity to conclude partnership discussions with three prestigious Chinese universities. President Anzai signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), an MOU and a student exchange agreement with Zhejiang University, and expanded its faculty-level student exchange program with Fudan University to a university-wide partnership to increase opportunities for collaboration.

This year's forum was sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education and hosted by Xi'an Jiaotong University, whose partnership with Keio dates back to 1980. After the forum concluded, Xi'an Jiaotong President Zheng Nanning personally welcomed the Keio delegation to Xi'an, and gave a tour of the beautiful campus, which was recently renewed to celebrate the university's 110th anniversary.

Up-to-date news on Keio's international activities can be found on the Organization for Global Initiatives (OGI) website.
