New Partnership with University of Edinburgh

Update:Nov. 29, 2005

On Tuesday November 22, Principal Timothy O'Shea of the University of Edinburgh and Keio University President Yuichiro Anzai signed a new comprehensive exchange agreement between the two institutions. The new partnership will focus on mutual participation in seminars and conferences, promoting international exchange programs and joint research for scholars and students.

The signing ceremony was held at the London headquarters of the British Council, an organization founded by the British government to develop and promote international education. The Rt. Hon. Lord Neil Kinnock, Chairman of the Council and former leader of the British Labor party, and Sir David Greene, the Council's Director General were also in attendance at the ceremony.

The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1583 and is the largest and most prestigious university in Scotland. Over 20,000 students, including approximately 3,600 international students comprising 120 nationalities, study together in a cosmopolitan and diverse student community. Students can choose from 21 faculties and three colleges, and many of the educational programs reflect the university's commitment to advanced research. A recently conducted Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) by the British Government awarded the institution full marks in 28 fields and 95% of faculty and staff were recognized with top honors.

Keio now has 190 collaborative agreements with 152 institutions around the world, providing a wide variety of international opportunities for students, faculty and staff, and encouraging a cosmopolitan and diverse student population at our campuses here in Japan.
